സവൈൽ, ജോൺ സവൈൽ, 3rd ഏൾ ഓഫ് മെക്സ്ബോറോയുടെയും, ഫിലിപ്പ് യോർക്ക്, 3rd ഏൾ ഓഫ് ഹാർഡ്വിക്കെന്റെ മകളുമായ ലേഡി ആനിയുടെയും മകനായിരുന്നു.[1]1821 നും 1826 നും ഇടയ്ക്ക് ഈറ്റണിലെ ക്ലാസിക്കുകളിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ കഴിവുകൾക്ക് പ്രശസ്തി നേടികൊടുത്തിരുന്നു. കൂടാതെ അദ്ദേഹം ബോക്സിംഗ് ആസ്വദിച്ചിരുന്നു. [2]1827-8.-ൽ കേംബ്രിഡ്ജിലെ ട്രിനിറ്റി കോളേജിൽ ചേർന്നു.[3]
