ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ഒമ്പതു പ്രവിശ്യകളിൽ വടക്കേയറ്റത്തുള്ള പ്രവിശ്യയാണ് വടക്കൻ പ്രവിശ്യ (തമിഴ്: வட மாகாணம் Vaṭakku Mākāṇam; സിംഹള: උතුරු පළාත Uturu Paḷāta). ജാഫ്നയാണ് തലസ്ഥാനം. 1988 മുതൽ 2006 വരെ കിഴക്കൻ പ്രവിശ്യയുമായി താൽക്കാലികമായി ലയിപ്പിച്ച് വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ പ്രവിശ്യയായാണ് ഭരണം നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്. ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ സിവിൽ യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ വേരുകൾ ഈ പ്രവിശ്യയിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉടലെടുത്തത്. ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ തമിഴ് രാജ്യം എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.[3]
അഞ്ചു ജില്ലകളാണ് വടക്കൻ പ്രവിശ്യയിലുള്ളത്. ജാഫ്ന(യാഴ്പ്പാണം), കിളിനൊച്ചി, മന്നാർ, മുല്ലൈതീവു, വവുനിയാ എന്നിവയാണ് ജില്ലകൾ. കാംഗേസന്തുറൈ, പരുത്തിത്തുറൈ, ചാവകച്ചേരി, സുന്നാകം, പണ്ടത്ത്അരിപ്പ് എന്നിവയാണ് നഗരകൾ.
